Officially formed in 2000, the Student Design and Experiential Learning Center began in a small metal-sided building, lacking air conditioning, and missing bathrooms. Five teams worked away in only about 1,500 square feet of carmped space and would wait hours to use on of the very few machines available.
A decade passed and 10 teams moved into a brand new 9,000 square foot facility known as the Kummer Student Design Center. This not only consolidated the administration and teams all into one building but provided the space and funds for new equipment such as CNC mills, CNC lathes, a waterjet, and so much more desperately needed equipment.
Still continuing to expand the unique hands-on learning seldom found anywhere else, the Student Design Center expanded again in 2020 to double the size of the Kummer Student Design Center by adding 8,000 square feet. The extra space provided much needed breathing room for each team as they continue to compete with universities from around the world.
